Behind the Scenes

When I start posing multiple families I start with adults first. In this case I wanted to anchor the photo with Grandma and Grandpa. You'll see how I place everyone surrounding them. I'm finding a balance while grouping everyone and putting the kids in last. Then I have them SQUEEZE! Naturally we don't stand this close to others, but for pictures you don't want gaps. Gaps look awkward and by eliminating them you create these warm genuine moments.

The Most Important Phrase

Adults, look at me and smile the whole time. I'll take care of the kids! It's natural (especially for the parents) to try to get their kids looking and smiling. As a photographer I know with large groups there will be head swaps for kids. But as long as the adults are set I can play around with the little ones. Another trick I use often for clients when the sun is shining in their eyes is to keep them closed until I count to 3! It can be a fun “game” and helps you capture an image with everyone's eyes open!
