Mini Session Themes That Book Well

Here’s a possibly unpopular opinion: Not all mini-session themes are created equal. I’m a big believer that in order for minis to book, you HAVE to have a solid theme. After years of trial and error on this one, I’ve put together the top characteristics of mini-session themes that are sure to book out. Use these as a filter for whether or not you’ve chosen a good theme! (Hint: Want my 12 best, proven mini-session theme ideas? Snag them for free HERE!)

    People Are Requesting It

A good way to know if a mini-session theme will book well is if it’s something people are asking for! Pay attention to your local facebook groups. What sort of sessions are moms wanting? I can tell you no mom is asking for Ice Cream Minis. (Sorry if you’ve been dying to do ice cream minis!)  Some common themes that I see asked about all the time are things like Unicorn Minis, Wildflower Minis, or Red Truck Christmas Minis. If you aren’t sure if it’s something families would want, try putting out some feelers! Post about it sharing some inspiration and see if anyone would be interested.

    It’s Unique AND Desirable

Notice the fact that I said unique AND desirable. It’s easy to come up with cutesy set-ups like Ice Cream Minis, but is that really desirable? I know for me, I don’t want or need professional photos of my kids eating ice cream (even if I wasn’t a photographer). Something like Unicorn Minis would definitely fall under the categories of unique and desirable because they’re something most moms would want for their little princess! See the difference between Ice Cream Minis and Unicorn Minis? Moms can’t just go in their backyard with their iphone and snap photos of a unicorn. Keep that in mind when picking your theme!

Families Would Want Prints On Their Wall

Another thing to think about when planning a mini-session theme is whether or not a family would want prints of that mini up on their wall. This is why non-themed minis at a beautiful location tend to go super well during the Fall! Everyone and their mom just wants a few photos for their Christmas cards, so putting together a beautiful set-up that isn’t too themed or using a beautiful location as your theme is always a great idea!

I hope this helps as you’re planning out your upcoming mini-sessions! Want a list of my 12 best, proven mini-session themes that are sure to book out? Snag it for free HERE!
